Vienna Nightlife

Vienna has a lot of musical history resting on the strings of the classical composers but there are plenty of nightclubs and bars to while away the evening hours as well.  Although Vienna doesn’t play the nightlife scene to the standards of New York or London, it has a lot of its own charm to offer visitors looking to experience Viennese nightlife.  Be prepared to be “laid back” and easy-going because that is what Vienna does best.

1. Akademietheater, Lisztstrasse 3 - website

The Burgtheater Company often performs both contemporary and classic works at this specialty theater.  This is the famous troupe’s second home.

2. Augustinerkeller, Augustinerstrasse 1 - website

Try some Austrian wines at this establishment.  This has been a popular stopping place with the locals since 1857.

3. Barfly’s, Esterhazygasse 33 - website

One thousand and one varieties of whiskey and famous cigars are stocked at this bar.

4. Flex, Donaukanal - website

This legendary club has a no nonsense sound system that your body will still be reeling from the next day.  Musical sounds range from techno to downbeat.  Check the schedule and hop on down to this nightclub for a party.

5. KJU Bar, Stadtbahnbogen 142-144 - website

This is the place to be for the younger set as university grads gather here to party and make merry among the mosh pit on the Gurtel.

6. Kaiko Club, Stadtbahnbogen 172-175 - website

This club used to be home to a Buddha Club, but while some of the décor may remain intact, that is about all.  This spirited club is definitely for the young and rowdy.

7. Volksgarten, Burgring 1 - website

This hang-out is for those loaded with lots of money, but the expenditure will be well worth it as this club is really three clubs rolled into one and is situated in a great location.

8. Weinstadt, Stadtbahnbogen 154 - website

Night owls can nibble gastronomic delights while sipping on Austrian, as well as International, wines at this locale run by a former lawyer.

9. Musikverein, Bosendorferstrasse 12 - website

This is a famed concert hall that is home to the Vienna Philharmonic and is counted among the acoustical holy trinity (the other two being located in Boston and Amsterdam).

10. Passage, Babenbergerstrasse (corner) - website

This nightclub makes its home underground in an old subway space.  It is now nown as one of Vienna’s hottest night spots.
